Overview Ross University School of Veterinary Medicine (RUSVM) offers a unique program of training on the island of St. Kitts in the Caribbean. An integrated biomedical curriculum, with innovative use of modern technologies and simulations, provides an ideal academic environment for training tomorrow's veterinarians and researchers. Our research program focuses upon integrated global health and ecological issues relevant to tropical and developing countries, within the RUSVM Center for Conservation Medicine and Ecosystem Health.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities The post-doctoral fellow position is an advanced three-year research position beginning March 1, 2015. This fellowship provides a unique opportunity to contribute, in part, to a trans-disciplinary approach in pathogen discovery, the ecology and evolution of infectious diseases, the management of invasive species, and/or the conservation biology of endangered/threatened wildlife on the island of St. Kitts, with major implications for the Caribbean region, and beyond. The basic objectives of the position include the further professional development of a post-doctoral fellow in advanced scientific knowledge acquisition and communication, honing of practical problem-solving skills in resource-limiting settings, and refinement of investigative abilities as relevant to historical and recent ecological disturbances in an insular environment. A candidate with strong quantitative epidemiological skills is sought, to provide support for the collection, management and analysis of data from studies on the ecology and health of domestic dog populations and other non-native species on St Kitts and elsewhere (50% of time), and to provide additional on-site epidemiological support to other researchers at RUSVM (50% of time). The candidate's primary research focus will be the establishment of health and demographic surveillance systems in owned, free-roaming dog populations in underserved communities, to generate data for the development of evidence-based strategies for humane population management and improvement of welfare of these populations. In addition to dogs, the candidate may also focus on similar questions in other non-native island fauna in the Caribbean, such as donkeys, cats, mongooses and non-human primates. In addition, the candidate will be expected to provide support in the design and analysis of studies by other researchers at RUSVM. The research fellow reports directly to the Center Director, and collaborates actively with faculty, veterinary and postgraduate students, and RUSVM staff. Additional duties and responsibilities may be assigned by the Center Director, as needed.

Experience in systematic reviews and meta-analysis is desirable. Knowledge of open-source software for the collection, management and analysis of data is highly desirable, including (but not limited to) Open Data Kit, MySQL, R. At least two years' experience in implementing and supervising population-based studies in domestic animal populations in resource-limited settings is required. Previous experience with analysis of dog population demographic data is highly desirable Previous experience in the (co-)supervision of postgraduate students is desirable. Excellent interpersonal and communication skills and the ability to work well with others in a collegial research team atmosphere. Evidence of international peer-reviewed publications, as well as a demonstrated grant writing ability. Salary: Commensurate with experience, approximately $55,000 USD annual salary plus medical insurance and travel support, to participate in at least one scientific conference per year, with the expectation that the fellow will provide a platform presentation.
